Povar Animal Hospital in East Providence, RI is a full service companion animal hospital. It is our commitment to provide quality veterinary care throughout the life of your pet. Our services and facilities are designed to assist in routine preventive care for young, healthy pets; early detection and treatment of disease as your pet ages; and complete medical and surgical care as necessary during his or her lifetime.
 Dr. MarK Povar | Born in Providence, RI., and grew up in East Providence. He graduated from East Providence High School in 1960. Dr. Povar attended Michigan State University from 1960-1967 recieving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He joined Povar Animal Hospital in 1967. Besides practicing at Povar Animal Hospital, he is an active member of both the State and New England Veterinary Medical Associations. Dr. Povar was President of both the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association and the New England Veterinary Medical Association. He served two terms on the Rhode Island state board of Veterinary Medicine. During these two terms, he also served as chairman. Dr. Povar is presently again a member of the State Board. He is a long term member of the RIVMA, AVMA, and AAHA. Dr. Povar is a co-owner of Povar Animal Hospital with Dr. Alterman. He resides in Cranston, R.I. with his wife Janice and dachshund Ruby Begonia. He has two grown children and one grandchild. His hobbies include music, computers and photography.

 Dr. Toby Alterman | Born in Providence, RI., and grew up in Warwick and Providence, graduated from Classical High School in 1961. Attended the University of Vermont from 1961-1963. Attended Purdue University School Of Veterinary Medicine from 1963-1967, graduated June 1967 with Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree. Started working at Povar Animal Hospital in July, 1967 until present. Co-owner of the hospital with Dr. Mark Povar. Served as Secretary of the Rhode Island Veterinary Medicine Assosciation for 11 years, and served one year as president. Member of the R.I.V.M.A., Indiana V.M.A., American Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Animal Hospital Association. Hobbies include photography, golf, gardening, and skiing. He has two grown children. He is a member of Metacomet Country Club and Temple Emanuel, Providence, RI.

 Dr. Rachel Coustan | Dr. Rachel Coustan graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH in 1993 with a BA in psychology. She then attended veterinary school at Purdue University and graduated in 2002. As a fourth year student at Purdue, Dr Coustan received several awards: AAHA Small Animal Medical and Surgical Award and Hill's Small Animal Clincial Nutrition Award. She started at Povar Animal Hospital as a volunteer, then later joined as a full time veterinarian at Povar Animal Hospital after graduating from Purdue. Dr. Coustan currently serves as President-elect of the RIVMA and is a member of the AVMA and AAHA. She lives in Providence with her husband and two sons.

 Dr. Ceri Sveilich | Dr. Ceri Sveilich recieved her undergraduate degree from Hofstra University in NY and in 2001 graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. She spent her clinical year at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in Athens, Georgia. Before coming to Povar Animal Hospital in 2003, Dr. Sveilich spent a year at a small animal practice in upstate NY where she was an Associate Veterinarian. Dr. Sveilich is a member of AVMA, RIVMA and AAHA and is the co-owner of one of the top pekingese show kennels in the country and has shown her own dogs to multiple group and speciality best in show wins.
