Veterinarians are the equivalent to animals what physicians are to human beings. Veterinarians are animal doctors that specialize in treatments and medical procedures for animals including: preventative medicine, nutrition and general health, and treatment of serious diseases and disorders. Veterinarians have a range of responsibilities that may include: administering vaccinations, prescribing medicine, creating a health nutrition plan and sometimes performing surgery on an injured or diseased animal. Veterinarians may also help to deliver babies for pregnant animals. While many veterinarians are generalists and focus mainly on domestic cats and dogs, there are some veterinarians that specialize in specific animal types. Veterinarians can specialize in types of animals such as reptiles, exotic animals (gerbils, guinea pigs and parrots), birds or horses. The type of veterinarian you visit will depend on the type of animal you own. Each veterinarian may have his or her area of expertise so it's a good idea to visit a few just to make sure that the veterinarian you choose has had sufficient experience treating your type of animal.
