Doctors
Dr. Leah Smith
Dr. Leah G. Smith is a 2002 graduate of Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She has been the Medical Director at VCA Mission Viejo Animal Hospital since August 2008. Dr. Smith has been practicing small animal general medicine since 2002, four of those years as a Captain in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps. In addition to practicing small animal medicine, Dr. Smith served in public health and herd health capacities in the military. She completed her undergraduate degree in biochemistry at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA in 1996. Her special interests include regenerative medicine, physical therapy, and public health. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and California Veterinary Medical Association. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, their 4 dogs and 1 cat, playing volleyball, landscaping, and cycling.
Dr. Cheryl Wood
Dr. Cheryl Wood graduated from the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in June 2007 and completed a year-long internship at the Animal Surgical and Emergency Center in Los Angeles, CA. During the internship, she cultivated her passion for surgery with board certified surgeons, and discovered an interest in internal medicine while working with critical patients in the ICU. Other rotations of interest included radiology, cardiology, emergency and critical care medicine, and internal medicine. After completing the internship, Dr. Wood was very excited to join the team at VCA Mission Viejo to offer the best quality patient care in both surgery and medicine. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her Maltese, Simba, doing Yoga, reading, fishing, and spending time at the beach.
Dr. Gibson
Dr. Gibson is a Southern California native and grew up in Orange County. Originally she planned on becoming an M.D., but later decided to become a veterinarian due to her love of animals. Dr. Gibson graduated from the Western University of Health Sciences with her doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 2010. Before that time she worked for two fortune 100 companies in marketing and volunteered for various organizations. In addition, Dr. Gibson also worked as a veterinary technician and volunteered at local animal shelters before starting veterinary school.
During her time at Western University, Dr. Gibson worked in many of the local specialty hospitals in various fields such as internal medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, emergency, and behavior medicine. Dr. Gibson has a special interest in internal medicine and behavior but enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine. In her free time Dr. Gibson enjoys spending time with her husband, friends, and family, as well as doing anything outdoors, pilates, wine tasting, and volunteering.
