After growing up in Jamaica and completing a certificate course in medical technology and a diploma in microbiology, Dr. Patricia Peynado-Boyce moved to the Washington D.C. area. Here she attended Howard University and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in microbiology in December of 1984.
After 2 ½ years working as a teaching assistant in the microbiology department at Howard University and as a veterinary assistant at a local animal hospital Dr. Peynado-Boyce decided to pursue her lifelong dream - becoming a veterinarian. As a veterinary student at Tuskegee University she tutored microbiology and received several awards, including the Regional Veterinary Women's Auxiliary Association and the Iams Nutrition Award. Being involved was an integral part of her veterinary studies as she graduated in the top 10% of her veterinary class.
Dr. Peynado-Boyce's veterinary interests include dermatology, internal medicine, and geriatric medicine. She is also the 2005-2006 President of the P.G. County Veterinary Medical Association.
Married with two children, two cats and a dog, Dr. Peynado-Boyce still finds some spare moments for hobbies and sports. She enjoys people, gardening, tennis, traveling especially to Jamaica, piano and attending her daughter's soccer games.
Dr. Lizel Salmon grew up in Prince Georges County and attended Friendly High School in Fort Washington, MD and the University of Maryland in College Park.
In 1992 she graduated, cum laude, from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine and was awarded her veterinary degree.
Dr. Salmon has received several veterinary related awards. After completing her veterinary studies, she was selected for a prestigious internship position, in internal medicine and surgery, at Virginia Tech Veterinary School. She has also been the recipient of the Iams Nutrition Award and a Public Health Service Award.
Because she grew up and still lives in Prince Georges County, Dr. Salmon is committed to providing quality veterinary care for this community.
At home, Dr. Salmon resides with her husband, two children, two dogs and two cats. She loves a good yard sale and is a diehard Redskins fan.
A graduate of Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville, MD, Dr. Tannis Johnson attended Tuskegee Institute where she received her B.S. Degree in Animal Science in 1981.
After spending four years in Tuskegee, AL, Dr. Johnson decided to continue her veterinary education at the same university. She was admitted to the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine and was awarded her DVM degree in 1985.
Dr. Johnson is a general practitioner with a special interest in geriatric medicine and dentistry. Along with her veterinary interests, she is an active member of the Unity Church in Washington, D.C. Not forgetting her Alma Mater, she is also quite active in the Tuskegee University Alumni Organization.
Outside the veterinary hospital, Dr. Johnson is kept pretty busy caring for her pugs (Kindred, Booker T, and Maximillian), Doberman Pinscher (Madison), and Bullmastiff (Jazz). Even with her busy schedule, she still finds time for sports. She enjoys cycling and weight training.
Dr. Majsztrik (pronounced mice-trick) received her DVM in 2005 at the University of Georgia. She completed a one year small animal medicine and surgery internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals in 2006. After that, she worked as an emergency clinician at Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral for approximately 3 years. She joined the A.P.A.W. team part time in September of 2009.
For over 15 years, Dr. Majsztrik has worked in the veterinary field. She has varied experience including emergency medicine and management of intensive care cases, surgical research with published works in the subjects of urinary incontinence and minimally invasive surgery, and general practice medicine. Her special interests include infectious diseases, minimally invasive diagnostics and procedures, pain management and transfusion medicine.
Dr Majsztrik resides in Laurel, Maryland with her husband, son, 3 dogs and 3 cats. Outside of veterinary medicine, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, scuba diving, swimming, exploring nature, reading and playing tennis.
She is very excited to be a part of the A.P.A.W. team and is looking forward to meeting you and your canine and feline family members!
