We are a full-service veterinary hospital accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association for over 30 years. Our veterinarians, Dr. J. Burner, Dr. Karen Sama, Dr. Allison Jones and Dr. Michael Martinez provide exceptional animal care that meets and exceeds the highest standards of veterinary medicine. We pride ourselves on providing the most comprehensive and attentive care possible in a low-stress environment.
At Anacapa Animal Hospital, your comfort and your pets comfort is a top priority. We offer two reception areas that separate our feline and canine patients while you wait. These areas have species specific calming pheromones recognized only by dogs and cats and helps lower stress levels for our more anxious patients.
With six large exam rooms our practice has the room it takes to make our hospital feel less crowded and less stressful for you and your pet. - We've dedicated one of our exam rooms for our feline patients which features our feline resource center. We've also created a Client Comfort Room to provide a private space for you to visit with your pet when they face a serious illness.
Dr. Burner graduated with honors from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996 and has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years. He completed a one-year internship in cardiology and internal medicine at California Animal Hospital before entering into general practice. Most recently, Dr. Burner practiced in a feline specialty hospital in Orange County.
Dr. Burner has a great deal of experience and interest in ultrasonography, internal medicine and cardiology. He is committed to practicing quality medicine and strives to treat every animal as if it were his own. Dr. Burner lives in Ventura with his wife Kirsten and daughter Sophia, along with their other “kids;” dog – Harper; and their tortoise, Stompy. Dr Burner is a proud member of the Ventura Veterinary Community and member of the Santa Barbara Ventura Veterinary Medical Association. In his off-duty hours, Dr. Burner enjoys surfing, reading, good food and spending time with his family.
Dr. Sama was born in Connecticut and received her undergraduate degree with an honors major in Psychobiology from New York University. She completed her DVM at Colorado State University in 1993, graduating cum laude, and has since practiced in both California and Connecticut. Dr. Sama’s special interests include feline medicine as well as rabbits and small mammals.
After practicing as a relief vet in the area, Dr. Sama has become an integral part of our mission and is excited to be a part of an AAHA hospital offering the highest quality medical care with emphasis on patient comfort and pain management. Currently, she resides in Ojai with her husband, Jim; their 2 children, Paul and Mae; and 2 dogs, and 3 cats. When they aren’t keeping her busy, she enjoys dining out, trivia night at the local pub, hiking, gardening and travel.
