Description

Mariposa Veterinary Wellness Center is the result of many years of planning and a commitment to bring integrated veterinary medicine to families in an warm and inviting facility.

Our mission is to provide the most beneficial combination of therapies for each individual pet and family in a friendly, home-like, environmentally responsible setting. We will meet our patient’s needs with respect and compassion. We will provide our clients with information and support, empowering them in their choices for their pet family members.

The building was constructed using straw bale design with passive solar and natural lighting throughout the facility. Full-spectrum compact fluorescent lighting is employed for energy conservation as well as for the well-being of the pets and people in the building. Our digital radiography system eliminates the need for processing chemicals and silver recycling. Non-toxic paint and surfaces were used whenever possible to prevent off-gassing and “sick-building syndrome”. Recycling bins are incorporated for paper, plastic, and glass and the medical records are paperless. The landscaping uses native plants and rain gardens for water conservation and to attract local birds and butterflies

Dr. Cathy King DVM, CVA
Dr. Cathy King DVM, CVA

Dr. Cathy King comes to us from Lawrence, where she founded Kaw Valley Natural Pet Care in 2004. She graduated from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984 and began a career working with pet animals. Although she practiced conventional veterinary medicine in her “early years,” Dr. King felt dissatisfied with the lack of holistic medicine, which she had found very helpful on a personal level. In 2000, she began studying at the Chi Institute with Dr. Shen Xie, Director of Holistic Services at the University Of Florida College Of Veterinary Medicine. In 2001, she was certified in small animal acupuncture and then completed certification in Chinese herbal medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine Food therapy and Tui-Na (Chinese massage). She has studied Bioenergy Therapy with Mietek Wirkus since 1997 and is participating in master’s certification training. She is also currently participating in a certification program for essential oil therapy for pets. “I enjoy focusing on providing natural therapies that either stand alone or complement allopathic medicine. An important consideration is that when a pet is well, a natural plan that is based on the pet’s constitution and living circumstances can help that pet stay healthy and avoid disease.”

Dr. King is in the office Wednesday-Friday.

Birds and animal behavior have always fascinated her, and she enjoys focusing her attention on these fields in veterinary medicine. She was very fortunate to practice in a progressive small animal practice for 8 years prior to joining Mariposa, which allowed her to hone her skills with all types of exotic pets and foster an open mindset towards alternative therapies.

With a strong sense of commitment to community service, Dr. JC has enjoyed volunteering for No More Homeless Pets KC, the Olathe Noon Rotary Club, and served six years on the board of the Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association (President in 2011). She also founded the Johnson County Animal Response Team (JoCART) and served as president 2010-2012. She is currently a member of the Lenexa Rotary Club and an advisory board member for JoCART.
