In January 2012, VCA Veterinary Specialty Center and VCA Indiana Veterinary Specialists combined into VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center.
VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center is a referral and emergency center founded to provide specialty services to support the needs of referral veterinarians. Our team of specialists works closely with your veterinarian to provide compassionate and effective therapies, using the most up-to-date advances in veterinary medicine. We are here to provide extensive medical and surgical services on an emergency basis to all veterinarians and pet owners of central Indiana. Our full-service emergency center is open 24 hours a day to provide complete and continuous patient care so that your pet may be discharged to your veterinarian or your home in stable conditio
Dr. Carl Budelsky received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois. He completed an ophthalmology internship with the Animal Eye Consultants in Elgin, Illinois, and a fellowship in ocular pathology under the training of Dr. Dubelzig at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Budelsky obtained and completed a residency training program in veterinary ophthamology with the University of Illinois. His professional interests include ocular pathology, techniques in corneal grafting, and ocular manifestations of systemic disease.read more

Johnny Cross was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and then moved to Blacksburg, Virginia at the age of four. He attended Blacksburg Middle and High School where he played football, basketball, and soccer. He received his Bachelor's of Science from Virginia Tech in 2002 majoring in Biology with Minors in both Chemistry and Entomology. He then attended Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2007.
After graduation, he continued his training as a rotating intern at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in New Jersey. Knowing for a long time he had a love for neurology/neurosurgery, he then completed his residency in neurology/neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania in 2011. He has several publications and has presented at the national level as well. Although interested in all aspects of veterinary neurology/neurosurgery, Dr. Cross is particularly interested in epilepsy, intervertebral disc disease, tumors of the nervous system, and infectious/inflammatory central nervous system diseases.
Although not a Midwest native, Dr. Cross is so happy to have chosen to build his career and live in Indiana. As the first neurologist in Indianapolis, he loves the unique and meaningful relationships he has built with general practitioners in the area. Dr. Cross lives here with his wife, two daughters, two dogs and a horse.

Departments: Internal Medicine
Dr. Edwards graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. She then went on to complete her internship and residency at the Michigan Veterinary Specialists located near Detroit, Michigan. She received her Acvim board certification in 2004 and went on to practice as an internist for two years with the Michigan Veterinary Specialists prior to joining the Indianapolis Veterinary Specialists in the summer of 2006. Her main interests are in nutrition, GI disease, hepatic disease, endocrinology, immune mediated disorders, nephrology. She is also proficient in ultrasonography and endoscopy. (GI, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy)
Dr. Browne grew up in Indiana and graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. She attended veterinary school at The Ohio State University, graduating in 2005. After completing a rotating internship at Purdue University, she practiced at a large specialty/emergency practice in Cincinnati before joining VCA in 2008.
She has a passion for emergency medicine, especially surgical emergencies and complex critical case management.
Outside of work, she enjoys exercise, music and spending time with her husband and twin girls.
Dr. Michelle Reckard graduated from the University of Florida in 1998 with a major in mathematics and minor in actuarial science. She worked for nine years in the actuarial consulting industry. In 2002 she began a career change into veterinary medicine, graduating from Argosy University in 2005 as a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT). Dr. Reckard received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine in May 2012 . After graduation, she moved to Indianapolis to complete a one year rotating small animal internship at VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center. After completing the internship, she joined the staff full time as an Emergency Clinician. She completed her Master of Public Health through the University of Minnesota, School of Public Health in September 2015.
In Minnesota, Dr. Reckard was highly involved with Basic Animal Rescue Training, a non-profit organization that trains firefighters and other first responders how to safely handle animals encountered during emergency situations. She served on the Board of Directors from 2008-2012. She is co-author of Basic Animal Rescue Training's Large Animal Recapture and Restraint Curriculum that was approved by the Department of Homeland Security as a state-sponsored course in September 2012 and a contributing author of Basic Animal Rescue Training's Small Animal Basic Life Support Curriculum that was approved by the Department of Homeland Security in March 2008. She has given numerous presentations to first responders and was a speaker at the 31st Annual Arrowhead Emergency Medical Safety Conference & Expo.
Dr. Smith received her Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Tennessee. She relocated to Indiana after graduation with her husband. Before joining our clinic, she practiced small animal medicine just south of Indianapolis. Dr. Smith spends all of her spare time with her family, including two dogs and two cats.
Homegrown in Indiana, Dr. Katie Wentworth originates from Bloomington, where her parents both taught at Indiana University. Her undergraduate years were mostly spent in sunny Miami, FL, though she did attend IU for her senior year. After a year of working as a marine mammal trainer, Dr. Wentworth started veterinary school, officially tarnishing the long family history of cream and crimson, by attending Purdue and graduating in 2008. Since graduation, Dr. Wentworth has worked in private practice with exotics/pocket pets as a focus as well as small animal preventative care. A love of emergent care for small animals developed and she has been pursuing this interest ever since, working in the ER setting for approximately one year.
In her spare time, Dr. Wentworth enjoys hanging out at the local dog park, honing her surgery skills by taking scalpel blade to paper to create silhouettes and greeting cards, as well as taking advantage of the myriad of activities available to her thanks to living downtown in Indianapolis. Dr. Wentworth is extremely excited to join the VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center team and looks forward to the chance to work alongside all of you!
Dr. Kerri Rechner is a 1999 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. She spent 9 years in general small animal practice in the Chicagoland area, 5 of which she was the Medical Director at VCA Naper Ridge Animal Hospital in Naperville, IL. She then relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina where she completed a residency training program in Radiation Oncology at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in July of 2010. She joined the VCA Veterinary Specialty Center, now Advanced Veterinary Care Center in 2010. She lives in Cicero with her husband David and a few 4-legged children.read more
Dr. Andrea Compton was born in Chicago, Illinois but spent her first few years in Indiana. Dr. Compton attended the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign for both her undergraduate and veterinary school. She received a Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences with a pre-vet focus and also completed her DVM there in 2012. Since graduation, Dr. Compton worked at a small animal practice South of Indianapolis before joining the emergency team at VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center in 2015.
Outside of work, she likes to cook and attend food events. Two of her passions are scuba diving and photography, but she spends most of her time being entertained by her three German Shorthaired Pointers- Mabel, Piper, and Ollie.
Dr. Victoria Lewis was born in Sayre, Pennsylvania but moved around the United States while growing up. After attending Houghton College in Upstate NY and receiving her Bachelor's degree in Biology in 2011, she attended veterinary school at the University College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland. After graduation, she moved to Indianapolis to complete a one year rotating small animal internship at VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center. After completing the internship, she joined the staff full time as an Emergency Clinician.
Dr. Lewis has a Boxer named Ireland and three French Bulldogs named Doris,Kevin, and Maui who occupy a lot of her time. She also likes to travel and enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking with her husband and three daughters.
Dr. Timothy Hui was born and raised in Sacramento, California. He completed his undergraduate degree at Stanford University in 2006 and then attended University of California, Davis Veterinary School, finishing in 2010. He then completed a rotating internship at Veterinary Medical and Surgical Group in Ventura, CA followed by an internal medicine specialty internship at Animal Specialty Group in Glendale, CA. After spending all his life in California, he decided to branch out by traveling east to Purdue University, completing a residency and becoming board certified in Internal Medicine. He has several publications and received multiple awards for both research presentations and excellence in teaching. Dr. Hui has a particular interest in endocrine, gastrointestinal, and hematological diseases. Dr. Hui enjoyed living in the Midwest so much, he decided to join VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center, settling here with his wife and their two dogs Radish and Lettuce. He also recently welcomed a non-furry child - his young son - into the fold. On his days off he enjoys working out, hiking, and spending time with his family.read more
Dr. Fitzpatrick is originally from Wisconsin, however, she went to veterinary school at Ross University in Saint Kitts. After leaving the island, she was fortunate to return home for her clinical year at the University of Wisconsin veterinary teaching hospital. She then went on to complete a rotating internship at VCA Aurora and Berwyn outside of Chicago. From there she traveled to Colorado to complete a residency in Internal Medicine at Colorado State University.
She and her husband have three cats, who are well traveled and survived moving to the Caribbean and back! They also have an island dog, jokingly known as a coconut retriever, who they rescued while on the island.
Being from Wisconsin, she is an avid fan of the Packers and the Badgers. When she can find some spare time, she enjoys live music, trivia, trying new restaurants and reading. She is excited to have joined the team at VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center and is eager to explore the Indianapolis area.
Dr. Sangster graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. After beginning her veterinary career in general practice and emergency medicine, she completed a residency in neurology and neurosurgery at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine where she received an Excellence in Teaching Award. She concurrently earned a Master's of Science degree for her research in acute spinal cord injury. Outside of the hospital Dr. Sangster enjoys spending time with her husband, friends and family including their three cats and feisty terrier.read more
Dr. Zoltan Szilagyi is a graduate of University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 2011. After graduation, he practiced as a general small animal practitioner for a few years in the Chicago suburban area, followed by a year as an emergency veterinarian in the Southside of Indy. Before joining the team at VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center, Dr. Zoltan completed a surgical internship at a large multi-specialty hospital in the Chicago area.
Although interested in all aspects of emergency medicine, Dr. Zoltan is particularly interested in surgical emergencies, foreign body removals, lacerations, and bite wounds.
Outside of work, Dr. Zoltan enjoys gardening, cooking, hiking, and spending time with his twin boys and wife, who is also a veterinarian.
Dr. Hamper was born and raised in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. She completed her undergraduate degrees in nursing, animal science and music at the University of Minnesota and her DVM from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation she worked in feline exclusive practices in Chicago and Washington D.C. before completing a small animal medicine internship at Veterinary Specialty Center in Indianapolis in 2005-2006. From there, she traveled to the University of Tennessee to complete a combined small animal nutrition residency and PhD program in comparative medicine (nutrition and immunology). Dr. Hamper became board-certified in veterinary nutrition in 2011. Her clinical interests include feline nutrition, nutritional immunology, and gastrointestinal health and disease. Dr. Hamper is passionate about providing optimal dietary care and information to referring veterinarians, and pet owners.read more
Dr. Manor is originally from Ohio and is thrilled to be returning to the Midwest. She completed her undergraduate degree at Clemson University and veterinary school at The Ohio State University. She was fortunate to then start a rotating internship at the University of Tennessee and, following completion, stayed at UT for a three-year residency in medical oncology. Her professional interests include the early detection of cancer and individualizing oncology care to meet the unique needs of each pet and family.read more
Dr. Kelsey Cline was born and raised in eastern Iowa, and attended Iowa State University for both her undergraduate and veterinary degrees. Upon graduation, she completed a small animal rotating internship in the Chicago area at VCA Aurora and VCA Berwyn, where she discovered an interest in diagnostic imaging and the resulting ability to assist in the diagnosis of otherwise-hidden ailments. That interest led her to accept and complete a combined residency/Master’s program in diagnostic imaging at Auburn University, where she was honored to serve as chief resident during her final year of residency.
Dr. Emily Talaga was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs. She moved to New York to attend Cornell University for both her undergraduate and veterinary degrees, graduating in 2009. She did an internship at VCA Aurora and Berwyn Hospitals, and went on to general practice in Northeast Pennsylvania and Cincinnati for several years. In 2014, Dr. Talaga became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner through the University of Tennessee. She joined the Advanced Veterinary Care Center of Fishers shortly thereafter. She loves working with all kinds of patients to help them move and feel better. Outside of work, she enjoys gardening, baking, and spending time with her husband, daughters, and dogs.read more
