Katharine Allen
Katharine Allen

Born in England, Dr. Allen spent most of her weekends during her teenage years working at an Equestrian Center to earn free horseback riding lessons. She then went on to become a British Horse Society qualified instructor. She received her BSc in Mathematics at the University of Southampton, and worked for a while for the Ministry of Defense in London, before moving to California with her US Navy husband. Here, she was able to return to school, and was awarded her Doctor Of Veterinary Medicine Degree from UC Davis in 1989. Dr. Allen was first employed at Loomis Basin Vet Clinic, a busy mixed animal practice in the foothills of the Sierras, and then moved to San Diego, where she loved it so much, she has stayed here for the past 25 years. Dr. Allen was 10 years at Kensington Veterinary Hospital, well known for its high standard of medicine and alternative treatment modalities. Since then, she has worked for VCA at several different locations, and is now very excited to be at Grossmont Animal Hospital as Medical Director. Dr. Allen currently has three cats, Max, Jack and Kitkin, and a horse, McKenna. Dr. Allen enjoys urgent care medicine in addition to wellness visits. She strongly believes that veterinary care should be available to all pets, and is committed to working with her clients to provide that care. Dr. Allen is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners. She is a strong supporter of Public Radio in San Diego, and can occasionally be heard on Midday Edition dispensing veterinary advice to callers. Since moving to San Diego, Dr. Allen has at various times been active with the Feral Cat Coalition, Greyhound Rescue and the Southern California German Shepherd Rescue.
