Christine West Hoornstra

Medical Director
Veterinary School: Michigan State University

I was born in East Lansing, Michigan where my parents were both college professors in the education department of Michigan State University. I spent most of my youth dedicating myself to the art of dressage with my Thoroughbred horse "Faygo". We were even the Jr. Young Midwest Champion one year!

I graduated from East Lansing High School and quickly moved on to Michigan State University where I graduated with a B.S. in Animal Science and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1997.

I came to the Grand Rapids area in 2000 and began working as an associate veterinarian at Woodland Hospital for Animals. I greatly enjoyed my time with Woodland and spent years developing my interest and skill with many different types of unique small mammals. Most recently, I have had the great pleasure of becoming the Medical Director for VCA Woodland Animal Hospital. I am very excited about this new responsibility.

When I am not at work I am kept very busy with my husband, young family and all their passions. My life is filled with gymnastics, karate, bike riding, swimming, school and church events. We have two dogs, Albert and Brik. Albert is a Shiba Inu and Brik is my husband’s partner at the Grand Rapids Police Department. Brik, who lives full time with us, is from the Czech Republic and is trained in patrol duties and narcotic detection. Most recently I have found myself back in the saddle -- and who knows where that will lead!

David Durham

Associate Veterinarian
Veterinary School: Michigan State University

I grew up in Flint, Michigan and always wanted to be a veterinarian. I began observing at a veterinary clinic while attending high school and quickly became excited about an Michigan State University education in veterinary medicine. Dr. Gregory Boggs and his staff of Heritage Veterinary Hospital helped nurture my interest in medicine and animal husbandry at age 15. My family was very excited to support me during my years at Michigan State University -they were all pulling for me during the entire 7 years and their support helped me to become the first university graduate in our family.

After attending Michigan State University from 1980 to 1987, I moved to Grand Rapids and began working as an associate DVM at The Animal Clinic under the guidance of Dr. Dick Bennett and Dr. Arch Conkey. Soon thereafter, I was hired as an associate DVM by Dr. Ed Farnham and began my career at Woodland Hospital for Animals in 1989.

At VCA Woodland I have had the opportunity to treat many pets and I enjoy working with cats, dogs, reptiles and small mammals.

This veterinary career has been, and still is, a blessing to me. It has been my passion for 45+ years and I am thrilled to be able to work with pets and their people in a beneficial and rewarding health care collaboration. It’s fun everyday and I really feel as if we are making a difference in the lives of our friends and community members. Thank you for the opportunity.
